I think I can confidently say, that as adults, we all have a few favourite dishes that we consider ‘comfort food’ … you know those ones that bring back memories or just feed your soul in just the right way?!?!?
I have several ‘comfort foods’ I reach for whether it’s a rainy day, a stressful week, or just one of those moments when I need a little extra TLC, but my number one choice is definitely eggs benedict. I love eggs benny so much that if I was on death row it would be my request for my last meal! If that isn’t ‘comfort’… I don’t know what is!
One’s own version of ‘comfort food’ is a personal preference that is as individual as our own fingerprints! But what actually makes some of our favourite things to eat a ritual that seemingly sustains the soul?
Comfort food often has a story behind it, a connection to a time, place, or person that brings us a sense of warmth and familiarity. Maybe it’s your grandmother’s famous soup recipe that she made every winter, or that one dish your mom would make on rainy days when you stayed home sick from school. These foods become tied to the emotions and experiences that we cherish, and that’s what makes them more than just a meal.
When we reach for comfort food, we’re often looking for more than just something to fill us up; we’re seeking that sense of nostalgia, that feeling of being taken care of, even if just for a moment. It’s like wrapping ourselves up in a cozy blanket made of flavors and scents, reminding us that we are connected to our past and to the people we love.
And let’s be real… it’s not just about the warm and fuzzy feelings. There’s also something truly satisfying about indulging in something rich, creamy, or savory when life feels overwhelming. Whether it's a warm bowl of mac and cheese, a rich stew simmered for hours, or a sweet treat that takes you back to childhood… comfort food is one of those little pleasures that makes the tough days feel just a bit lighter.
But what’s really fascinating is how comfort food is so deeply personal. What soothes one person’s soul might be completely different from someone else’s go-to comfort dish. For some, it’s all about the rich, hearty meals, while others find comfort in the simplicity of a cup of hot tea or a slice of buttered toast. It’s a reminder that we all find comfort in different ways… and that’s a beautiful thing.
So, the next time you find yourself reaching for that favorite dish, remember that you’re not just feeding your body; you’re feeding a part of your heart, too. And in a world that can often feel fast-paced and chaotic, there’s something incredibly grounding about those simple, familiar flavors that remind us of home, of simpler times, and of the people who have shaped us along the way.
Stay warm and cozy ❤️
