Hello and welcome to the current Mercury Retrograde! If you’re like me, I’m sure you have heard mention of Mercury retrogrades… and some blame being cast as to why technology glitches, appointments are missed (or arrived to late), and misunderstandings arise
The current Mercury Retrograde is transiting between the astrological signs of Virgo and Leo. It began on August 5, 2024, and will continue until August 28, 2024. The understanding of what astrological sign(s) a Mercury Retrograde is affected by can provide a clearer understanding of what to expect during the 3-4 week retrograde period.
Virgo is an Earth sign associated with practicality, organization, and at times extreme attention to detail. Leo is a fire sign associated with passion, courage and leadership, which can at times come across as ‘Leo knows best’.
So, this retrograde may particularly affect some of the following areas of daily routines:
Diplomatic Conversations…
On one hand, one or more persons may not be given the chance to speak their viewpoint, feeling shushed or passed over
On the other hand, there may be a feeling of ‘why is no one taking my advice or listening to me?'
Project completion and/or start...
This is not a good time to start a big new project. Miscommunications have the potential to harm the project more than waiting a few weeks to start.
For project completion there is some potential that delays may play a part in the next few weeks as tendencies of perfectionism and over analyzations may want to creep in. The invitation here is to be kind with yourself and the people around you!
So what is a Mercury Retrograde?? 🤔
Mercury Retrograde is an astrological phenomenon where the planet Mercury appears to be moving backward in its orbit as seen from Earth. This is an optical illusion caused by all the planets moving at different speeds from one another. It’s similar to driving on a highway with multiple lanes of traffic all going in the same direction… imagine passing a car in another lane that’s going more slowly that you. Even though you are both going in the same direction, that car may appear to be moving backward in comparison to the speed you are travelling while passing it. This is what’s happening when Mercury laps Earth.
Here are some key points regarding a Mercury Retrograde...
Astrological Significance:
In astrology, Mercury is associated with communication, technology, travel, and information processing; thus, when Mercury is in retrograde, these areas are believed to be more prone to disruptions, confusion, and delays.
Frequency:
Mercury Retrograde occurs approximately every 4 months, causing a Mercury retrograde event about three to four times a year.
Each retrograde lasts about three weeks.
Common Beliefs:
There seems to be a common accepted (or at least heard about) belief that during this period, it's easier to experience misunderstandings, technology failures, travel delays, and general disruptions to daily routines.
It is often advised to avoid making important decisions, signing contracts, or starting new projects during this time.
Scientific Perspective:
Astronomically, there's no actual backward movement of Mercury; it's purely an observational effect as perceived from our planet… Earth.
Scientifically, the notion that Mercury Retrograde causes mishaps is not supported by evidence. The phenomenon is mostly of interest to those who follow astrology.
Cultural Impact:
Despite its astrological roots, the concept of Mercury Retrograde has entered popular culture.
People from various backgrounds often use it as a light-hearted explanation for unexpected problems, annoyances or delays.
Ok, so all of the above makes a Mercury retrograde sound daunting and mean! 🙃 However, it does not need to be this at all!!
Below are 5 steps to navigating a Mercury Retrograde with preparation and grace:
Double Check Everything ✅
Communication: Whether it's an email, text, or important document, spend a little extra time reviewing your messages for clarity and accuracy before pressing ‘send’.
Travel Plans: Reconfirm travel itineraries, check for delays, and consider having a backup plan ready to implement just in case anything unexpected causes cancelations or delays to your plans.
Avoid Major Decisions 📑
Contracts and Agreements: If possible, postpone signing contracts or committing to binding agreements until Mercury Retrograde has passed.
Life Changes: Avoid starting new projects, jobs, or making significant life changes during this time… focusing instead on reviewing and revising plans in preparation for future implementation.
Back Up Your Data 👩💻
Digital Precautions: Protect your data by backing up your computer, phone, and any other important files. Mercury Retrograde does seem to have quite the notorious reputation for causing a plethora of tech glitches.
Update Software: Ensure that all your devices and software are updated… this can aid in minimizing the risk of unexpected issues.
Be Flexible and Patient 🤗
Embrace Delays: Expecting delays and disruptions can ease one’s ability to ‘going with the flow’ and can postpone (or even prevent) extreme frustrated.
Stay Calm: If things go wrong, remember it’s just temporary.
The Breath Connection’s ‘Four Steps to Vibrant Health’ is a great resource for anytime, but especially during a Mercury retrograde… together we can breathe, observe, apply and love ourselves through the unexpectedness of this retrograde period.
Reflect and Revisit 💫
Introspection: Mercury Retrograde is an excellent time for reflection. Review past actions, reconsider old ideas, and take the opportunity to reflect and celebrate all you have experienced so far… just remember, you have survived 100% of all your experiences to date! 🧡
Reconnect: This is a good time to reconnect with old friends or revisit previous projects that need a new perspective or a finishing touch.
