Following the cycles of the moon is something I have done (whether unconsciously or consciously) for my entire life – and perhaps, as you read this blog, you will realize that you have to!
Certain ancient cultures had a profound understanding of the moon's movements, often incorporating its observation into their daily lives and cultural practices.
One of the most well-known effects of the moon is its influence on the ocean tides. The relative position of the Earth, moon and sun dictate the strength of this gravitational pull and subsequently influence the ebb and flow and timing of the tides.
Seafaring cultures, for example, used the moon for navigation and timekeeping. By observing the moon's position and phases, seafarers and sailors alike were able to determine directions and estimate the passage of time during long sea voyages.
Ancient farmers relied on the moon's phases to determine the best time for planting, harvesting, and other agricultural activities. They believed, by aligning their farming practices with the moon's cycles they would yield better results. The gravitational pull of a full moon causes moisture to rise in the earth, thus being an optimal time for planting.
Lunar farming is still practiced today!
Other ancient cultures developed calendars by observing the moon’s phases and dividing time into months. There were cultures who conducted rituals, celebrated and depicted lunar symbolism in their art, architecture and literature.
Even animals exhibit unique behaviours in relation to moon cycles. For example, a full moon will have lions hunting in daylight instead of at night, scorpions glow blue under the full moon and badgers becomes pee-shy, marking their territory less.
So, if the moon’s effect is this strong on ocean tides, soil moisture and animal behavior; it is very likely that the moon would have an effect on humans as well. Why you say? Well... the human body is 60-70% water (similar to animals who are 50-80% water) and if water is the strongest conductor of the moon’s affects, then it is understandable that the human body would be affected by the moon’s ever changing yet consistent cycles.
The moon travels through all its phases every 29.5 days. Below is a short breakdown of the four most known phases and their possible effects on us. As you make note of each of the moon phases listed below, pay close attention to your body as well. Do you experience more pain in one moon phase as opposed to another? Do you feel more energetic in one or more moon cycles as opposed to the others? Or do you notice no change, no matter where the moon is in her monthly travels?

Just as in ancient cultures, even today, the moon can be more than just a distant object in the sky; it’s consistent cycles can provide insight and guidance to our often fast paced and information overloaded daily lives. In times of old, the moon was often seen as a guiding light and a source of hope and inspiration.
