Nourish Your Heart

What does it really mean to nourish your heart?

As you can imagine… the answer to this is vastly different for everyone.  All I know for sure is that nourishing your heart is so important and not something to be neglected.

The symbolism of the heart chakra is a great place to start to understand what it means to nourish your heart.  I have read many texts regarding the heart chakra and I think the following points sum it up pretty well:

  • Love and Compassion - the heart chakra is associated with the capacity to love unconditionally, both oneself and others. It symbolizes the ability to give and receive love freely, fostering empathy and compassion towards oneself and others

  • Harmony and Balance - an open and balanced heart chakra promotes harmony and balance within oneself and in relationships with others. It signifies the integration of opposites, such as masculine and feminine energies, and the ability to find peace amidst life's challenges

  • Connection and Interconnectedness – the heart chakra symbolizes the understanding of the interconnectedness of all beings and the recognition of the universal bond that unites everything in existence. It emphasizes the concept of "we are all one" and promotes a sense of unity and belonging

  • Healing and Forgiveness - the heart chakra is associated with emotional healing and the ability to forgive oneself and others. It symbolizes the release of past hurts and resentments, allowing for healing and growth

  • Self-acceptance and Self-compassion – the heart chakra represents acceptance and compassion towards oneself, embracing one's strengths and weaknesses with kindness and understanding

Wow – that’s a lot of pressure on the ole’ heart… no wonder it hurts sometimes!  Now you understand why it is so important to be gentle and nourish that beautiful heart of yours… it has got a lot going on!

The colour most commonly associated to the heart energy center is green.  The colour green has various symbolic meanings across different cultures and contexts but some of my strongest associations with the colour green are with nature and specifically renewal, rejuvenation and transformation.  That sounds like ‘nourish’ to me!

For myself, the definition of ‘Nourishing Your Heart” means engaging in activities or practices that promote positive emotions, fulfillment and overall happiness.   Essentially, it's about fostering a sense of inner peace, joy, and contentment in one's life.

If your heart chakra is out of balance or blocked it can cause a domino like effect to the chakras above and below its center position in our bodies.  If our heart is not in alignment, so many other physical and emotional issues will show up for us.  Knowing this… you can understand why the heart needs to be given a little extra care and attention on a regular basis.

Balancing and opening the heart chakra is as simple as…

  • rest your hand over your heart

  • inhale into your heart space

  • relax out into your body on the exhale

Where focus goes… energy follows.
