Red Light Therapy - Saved My Bacon!

During my 9-week SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth) treatment I had very sore joints.

My red light therapy pad saved me and kept me functional day after day!

Let me give you a little background on how I stumbled across this marvelous healing tool 6 years ago…

I was first introduced to it by my friend Judy, who is a horse chiropractor and energy worker and a kickass barrel rider. I was out at her place to swap treatments and she told me that she had something to show me. She reached into her truck and pulled out a red light therapy pad and ushered me towards the paddock. “Watch” she said as she held the pad behind her back. We were approaching her big, beautiful mare who was standing quietly along the fence line… as soon as Judy pulled the pad out from behind her back… Twiggy instantly reacted and began nodding her head, pawing the ground, pursing her lips, sticking her tongue out and whinnying.

Ok…now my interest was definitely peaked… ‘cause animals and little kids know stuff… and this horse 100% knew that she wanted red light therapy.

Judy took me into the house, gave me a treatment, used the red light on me, sent me home with a little flashlight version to try and… Waalaa…  my love affair with red light therapy began!

Here is a little bit of the science behind the magic…

Red light therapy harnesses the power of specific wavelengths of red or near-infrared light to stimulate cellular activity and encourage healing in the tissues. Our cells have these little battery packs in them called “mitochondria”, the red light stimulates the mitochondria to produce more energy which, in turn, helps to repair the cells and promote cellular health.

This non-invasive treatment has gained recognition for its ability to penetrate the skin and promote a wide range of therapeutic effects… skin rejuvenation, wound healing, pain management, inflammation reduction, injury recovery, thyroid management, as well as having a positive impact on mood and sleep.

I have personally used my red light therapy pad, with great success, on sore joints… knees, feet, neck and thumbs, on wound healing… cuts and burns, and on my thyroid.

I find it works best with three to four 20 min. treatments per week, but I definitely notice a difference with just one treatment.

There are a number of iterations of red light therapy on the market: flexible pads (my favorite), stands, light bulbs, flashlights, face masks, whole body red light beds and oral devices (my next purchase). The cost ranges from about $50 for bulbs to $4000 for a full body stand. My flexible pad was $380. There are also many new red light beds available at tanning salons or spas for approximately $20 per session.

We have two red light pads in our household… because Mom, Doug and I were all arguing about whose turn it was next. We love that it can be used on any body part and travel with us wherever we go. Doug uses it on his knees and Mom is rehabbing a shoulder injury. My Aunt uses her pad nightly and has had great success healing sciatica and low back pain. My oldest son uses it daily on his neck while working on the computer! The applications are endless, and the results are consistently positive!

I have spent my career as a massage therapist and exercise rehab specialist seeking out and trying new pain reduction tools… this one is my favourite! I have a long-held belief that frequency is about to become an important part of mainstream healthcare… particularly in the form of light and sound therapy! I love how accessible and cost effective light therapy has already become to the general public!
