Spring Equinox

The Spring Equinox, also known as the Vernal Equinox, occurs around March 20th or 21st in the Northern Hemisphere and around September 22nd or 23rd in the Southern Hemisphere. The term "equinox" is derived from the Latin words "aequus" (equal) and "nox" (night).

This astronomical annual event marks the point in Earth's orbit around the Sun when the number of hours from sunrise to sunset (daylight) and the number of hours from sunset to sunrise (night) are approximately the same.

Equinoxes, both Vernal (Spring) and Autumnal (Fall) are astronomical events related to the tilt of Earth's axis. During this time, the axis is not tilted toward or away from the Sun, thus allowing for nearly equal amounts of daylight and darkness across the globe. The equinoxes are important markers for defining seasons.

The March equinox signifies the transition from winter to spring in the Northern Hemisphere and the transition from summer to fall in the Southern Hemisphere… for the purpose of this blog, my focus will be on the Spring Equinox

Culturally and historically, many societies have celebrated the Spring Equinox as a time of renewal, fertility, and the awakening of nature after plants, vegetation and some animals have been dormant during the winter months.

Various traditions and festivals around the world mark the arrival of Spring with symbols of rebirth, growth, and the balance between light and darkness. The arrival of spring holds significant spiritual meaning for many people around the world. Some examples of spring festivals include Nowruz in Persian cultures, Holi in Hindu cultures, and Easter in Christian cultures.

Here are some common spiritual themes associated with spring:

Renewal and Rebirth:

  • Spring is often seen as a time that symbolizes new beginnings and fresh starts. Just as nature awakens from its winter slumber, individuals may feel inspired to shed old habits, attitudes, or burdens and embrace a sense of rejuvenation.

Balance and Harmony:

  • The Spring Equinox marks a moment of balance between light and darkness, day and night and serves as a reminder for us to seek our own balance within ourselves and in our lives.

Connection to Nature:

  • As flowers bloom, trees bud, and animals awaken from hibernation, there are parallel energies of growth and vitality in the air. Intentionally connecting with nature during the spring season can also generate the energy of creativity, inspiration, and vitality within each of us.

Fertility and Creativity:

  • This symbolism reflects the abundance and possibilities of the season! Springtime rituals and traditions often honor these themes, celebrating the creative power of life.

Hope and Optimism:

  • After the darkness and cold of winter, the arrival of spring for many brings a renewed sense of hope and optimism for the future. The longer days, warmer temperatures, and blooming landscapes inspire feelings of joy, gratitude, and anticipation. Spring serves as a reminder that even in the darkest times, there is always the promise of light and new growth.

Overall, the spiritual meaning of spring encompasses themes of renewal, balance, connection, creativity, hope, and awakening. This enriched time of the year invites us to align with the rhythms of nature, cultivate gratitude for the gifts of life, and embrace the infinite possibilities of the season.

Here are 4 Spring Equinox activities for you to try if you wish:

One ~ Bless a bouquet of fresh flowers and place it in your home 💐

  • Purchase or gather flowers that speak to you.

  • Once purchased or gathered, hold the flowers in sunlight (if it’s not sunny visualize sunlight filling them)

  • Imagine the sunlight filling your flowers with qualities of balance, playfulness, love, new beginnings… and any other qualities that are meaningful to you.

  • When done, place them in a favourite vase and display them in an area of your home where they will bring you joy!

Two ~ Dance and laugh at the same time… preferably barefoot and outside 💃🏽

  • Spring invites us to express our inner child’s qualities of playfulness and fun!

  • Dancing to your favourite fun music is a great way to express this… and doing this barefoot outdoors while laughing will fill you with that vibrant, springtime vibration that magnetizes blessings and spreads joy wherever you go.

Three ~ Bless chocolate eggs… then eat them 🪺

  • Purchase your favourite chocolate eggs.

  • Hold one (or as many as you want) in your right hand and cup your left hand over the top.

  • Think of a Springtime positive intention that you have.

  • Visualize this intention and invite and bring up as many positive, exciting, energizing, positive feelings associated with this intention.

  • Consciously direct these positive, energizing feelings and visualizations into the egg… then eat it.

  • This will internalize your intention and set it in motion, sort of like planting a seed.

  • Repeat as desired… either with a new intention or the same intention multiple time 😊

Four ~ Plant some seeds 🌱

  • Planting seeds is an old standby when it comes to Springtime activities.

  • If you live in an area that’s still in danger of frost, consider planting your seeds in a pot indoors.

  • Purchase or gather the seeds you wish to plant.

  • Prepare your soil outdoors or the soil in a pot indoors.

  • Bless your seeds by placing them in your hands and holding them in sunlight (if it’s not sunny visualize sunlight filling them)

  • Imagine the sunlight filling your seeds with your most glorious intentions for the coming season and year.

  • Plant your seeds with gratitude and joy.

Remember, the ideas and suggestions in this blog are just ideas, and you are invited to tailor them to suit your personal beliefs and preferences. The Spring Equinox is a versatile and meaningful time for reflection, renewal, and celebration.

Much love,
