The Root of Stability

In order to dream and create… your base needs MUST be met! You must have feelings of safety, security, and connection before you can truly pursue your passions!

One of my teachers stated it like this: “Base needs must be met before you are able to step into your creative energy. Otherwise, it is a bit like asking a deer being chased by a wolf, to stop and paint a picture... survival comes first, and creativity comes next.”

When we worry about money, feel like we do not belong, do not feel safe, or stress out about our relationships… we are mucking about in this survival energy. Whenever I have an experience like this, I activate and balance my root chakra. It is the most effective way that I know of to settle back into the faith that I am loved, supported, abundant and meant to dream big dreams!

The root chakra is the first of the seven primary chakras in the body, serving as the foundation of our energy system. Located at the base of the spine, it governs our sense of safety, security, and grounding. This chakra is associated with the color red and represents our connection to the Earth, the physical world, and our basic needs. When balanced, the root chakra provides stability, a sense of belonging, and the confidence to move forward in life.

Physically, the root chakra is connected to areas like the legs, feet, and lower spine. Mentally and emotionally, it relates to our survival instincts, such as food, shelter, and financial security. This chakra impacts our feelings of stability and self-assurance, and it influences our ability to feel “rooted” in life. When our root chakra is balanced, we tend to feel grounded, calm, and resilient, ready to face life’s challenges.

An underactive root chakra can leave us feeling anxious, insecure, and disconnected. We might experience persistent fears around money, relationships, or other life foundations. Physical symptoms can include issues with digestion, lower back pain, and fatigue. On the other hand, an overactive root chakra can lead to stubbornness, greed, and excessive materialism, as well as a constant desire for control.

For the month of November we are talking about how balancing the root chakra involves connecting with your body and the Earth.

Simple practices can support this process:

  • walking barefoot on natural ground

  • practicing grounding yoga poses (such as Mountain or Tree Pose)

  • spending time in nature

  • meditation focused on the root chakra

  • eating grounding foods, like root vegetables

  • wearing the color red

By nurturing this energy center, we set ourselves up for greater resilience and a stronger connection to our own inner strength. Taking just a few minutes a day to focus on grounding practices can make a profound difference, supporting a more balanced and rooted life!
