A Tennis Ball & Your Breath: Your Summer Self-Care Secret

Happy be-lated Summer Solstice, Sweet Friends! 🌄

July and August lay before us unwritten! There is a wonderful kind of busy that these summer months offer… a garden to tend, suitcases to haul, a trail to climb, or outdoor tents to pitch. Hours of happy moments await. Whether it’s on a patio or a paddleboard, a street festival or your backyard – summer months often promise lots and lots of movement!

Even thought all of this movement is a gift, it also asks a lot of our bodies. By the end of a full day, you might notice a tightness through your shoulders, an ache in your lower back, or feet that feel like they've walked a marathon. Often, the culprit causing discomfort and pain isn't so much your muscles as it is your fascia.

Fascia is the delicate web of connective tissue that wraps around every muscle, bone, and organ, holding you together from the inside out. When fascia gets sticky and restricted, it pulls and tugs in ways that show up as discomfort and pain.

GREAT NEWS! 📣 One of the simplest tools for releasing facial tension is probably already rolling around in your closet… a humble tennis ball 🥎 Its gentle give and just-right firmness is perfect for coaxing tight fascia to soften and let go.

You simply place the ball against a tender or tight spot, lean in with as much pressure as feels good, and let your body weight do the quiet, yet effective, work:

  • roll it slowly along the sole of your foot after a day on your feet in the garden,

  • tuck it between your shoulder blade and a wall after a road trip and hauling your luggage, or

  • sink it into your glutes and hips after a hike.

When you find a tight spot, resist the urge to grit your teeth and push through.

Instead:

  • pause.

  • take one sweet, slow breath in,

  • and as you exhale, imagine that tension melting and the tissue releasing beneath the ball.

That’s it! There's no rigorous routine to schedule and no class to attend. Just a pause and a breath.

Conscious breathing tells your nervous system it's safe to soften, and that's when fascia truly responds. A few mindful breaths on each spot will do far more than a minute of distracted, white-knuckled pressure. You're not forcing your body to change; you're inviting it to remember its own innate ability to release, relax and yes, heal!

As you head into these sun-filled months (well, hopefully as we have had a LOT of rain already here in Alberta), keep a tennis ball where you'll see it, perhaps by your favourite chair or tucked in your travel bag.

It can act as a small, loving reminder to check in, breathe, and tend to yourself amid all the summer fun. A few minutes of this gentle attention can mean the difference between waking up stiff and waking up ready for another beautiful day.

After all, aging with grace and vitality isn't about doing more. It's about these small, conscious shifts that honour your body, one sweet breath at a time.
