What IS Functional Healing?
I recently returned home after a week of travel:
Prince George to Osoyoos to take my mom home
Osoyoos to Vancouver to visit my oldest son, his sweet girl and my new grandbaby growing in her belly
Vancouver to Burnaby (four times) to visit my youngest son and his sweet girl
Vancouver to Prince George home sweet home
In total Doug and I spent approximately 26 - 28 hours in the truck over 7 days!
Now, don’t get me wrong… I LOVE road tripping… but my neck was not quite as jazzed about that many hours in a vehicle!
Neck pain began to:
wake me up in the night
alert me when I spent too much time video editing
hamper my ability to haul, lift and dig in my yard
restrict shoulder checking while driving
For a day or two, I did what we all do… I tried to ignore it and hoped that it would go away on its own. By day three, I became fully aware that my neck was feeling progressively worse and it was time to apply some Functional Healing to the situation.
Functional Healing...
is the practice of taking your everyday life and turning it into a conscious, mindful experience that heals your body.
Ok… so how did I do that?
Breathe - I spent day three observing which movement patterns or situations caused me neck pain and identified the top 3 most painful ones… looking over my left shoulder, picking up something heavy, and sitting at my iPad for too long. I then applied breath to these top three pain points. I made sure that I was not holding my breath as I looked over my shoulder and picked up heavy objects and I used ribcage breathing to bring my head and neck back into proper posture when on my iPad. IMMEDIATE RELIEF!
Observe - With the pain coming under control, I began to observe my thoughts whenever I experienced discomfort. Neck pain is often tied to being too rigid and I found that I was having a hard time giving myself some grace to play or relax. I had been working such long hours finishing our course that I did not know how to relax anymore, and I found that my neck pain thoughts trended towards “I should be getting more done” or “I do not have time for that.” I reframed those old beliefs with this phrase “The hard work is over and I actually work more efficiently when I take breaks and feel rested!” I take a deep breath and say this to myself anytime my neck gives me a little tweak.
Apply - I applied a topical pain cream twice a day (morning & night) and I used my red-light therapy pad daily. I applied silicone cups twice and iced my neck once over 8 days. (Click HERE to view these tools)
Love - I tapped into my intuition and decided upon a technique that felt like it offered me the most self-love. It is an acupressure point named the ‘Luozhen’ that accompanies some easy neck movements. (Please see the picture below) I linked this technique every day to my morning shower.

It took me 8 days of applying Our Healing Method - breathe. observe. apply. love. to bring my neck back from the abyss! Healing, however, is not linear… I spent the whole day in the garden yesterday and could feel a little discomfort when I stopped for supper… so I applied my red-light pad while I watched a movie and then slathered myself in joint & muscle cream before bed. I woke up feeling great with zero neck pain… but I know that a little more care will be required as I get back to all of my daily tasks.
This is Functional Healing! I took my everyday activities and turned them into conscious, mindful experiences that healed me!
