Breathe Yourself Cool
Well, Sweet Friends, summer has officially arrived… and so has the heat! ☀️
There's a particular kind of July afternoon when the air feels heavy, the fan is just pushing warm air around, and the thought of melting into a puddle seems delightfully refreshing.
On days like that, did you know your own breath can actually help cool you down?
Sound almost too good to be true??
Well it's a real, time-honoured technique, and it's been hiding in plain sight this whole time… it's called a Cooling Breath
Here's how it works:
Curl the sides of your tongue up into a little tube
Start by gently sticking your curled tongue just past your lips
MODIFICATION: If tongue-curling isn't your thing, simply rest your top and bottom teeth lightly together, part your lips into a soft smile, and sip the air in through your teeth instead.
Slowly draw your breath in through the straw of your tongue (or your teeth).
Feel the incoming air turn cool and fresh as it passes over your tongue.
Close your mouth and let the exhale flow out quietly through your nose.
That's it! 🧡
Give it a try right now:
Inhale slowly and coolly through your curled tongue (or gently through your teeth),
close your mouth,
and exhale softly through your nose,
repeat for a handful of unhurried rounds.
Return to this breath as often as needed 💨💨💨
What I love about this little practice is that it does double duty.
Yes, that drawn-in breath genuinely feels cooler… AND the slow, deliberate rhythm is also quietly telling your nervous system that all is well, that it's safe to soften.
A settled nervous system handles a hot day so much more gracefully than a frazzled one. Summer heat is not for your body to battle against… this Cooling Breath invites your body to meet it with a little more ease.
So the next time summer days turn up the temperature, and before you reach for yet another iced coffee, try reaching for your breath first. 🤔
A few cool, conscious inhales might be exactly the refreshment your body wants… and it's free, it's always with you, and it works one sweet breath at a time. 🧊💨
Love,
