Breathing Thru the Miles

Breathing Thru the Miles

July 29, 20262 min read

Sweet Friends, are you hitting the road (or the skies) this upcoming long weekend? ✈️

The long days of summer practically beg us to travel… off to the lake, across the province to see family, or further afield for a long-awaited getaway. But oh, what those hours of sitting can do to a body!

Often, by the time we arrive…

  • our hips are stiff,

  • our low back is grumbling,

  • our shoulders are up around our ears,

  • and our nervous system, having attempted to manage all the logistics (bookings, luggage, meals, stops, etc) is just as frazzled as our muscles.

In our May 11, 2026 blog, Marnie talked about easing travel-day tightness after a week of road-tripping with her guy, Doug… today, let's tend to ourselves during travel.

You don't need to leave your seat to help your body through the miles.

Right there in the car (when you're the passenger, of course!) or the airplane row, you can offer yourself small, breath-led movements that keep things from seizing up with the easy, yet effective movements below:

  • inhale and gently roll your shoulders back on an exhale,

  • breathe in and out while lifting and lowering your heels,

  • breath in and out while circling your ankles to keep the blood moving in your legs,

  • lengthen up through the crown of your head as you inhale,

  • soften on the exhale, undoing that hunched-forward travel slump.

Each little movement paired with a conscious breath is a quiet reminder to your body that it’s not stuck… it's simply on its way 🩷

There is one more aspect of travelling that often goes unnoticed (or ignored) by many of us (myself – absolutely – included) and that is travel days are HARD on our nervous system!

The early alarms, the schedules, the crowds, the what-ifs and the why-do-I-feel-like-I’m-forgetting-something 😲🫣

It all keeps us subtly braced for hours on end.

This is where your breath becomes your truest travelling companion…

  • take a few slow inhales with a long-exhale breaths,

  • repeat 3-5 times whenever you remember 🧡

These looonng exhale breaths will gently communicate to your nervous system that:

  • all is well,

  • you are safe,

  • you have permission to soften even in transit.

Consciously using your breath throughout your travels… whether its this coming long weekend or anytime in the future… will allow you to arrive at your destination less stiff, AND as a calmer and more relaxed YOU.

So pack your sunscreen and your snacks, sweet friends… but don't forget to pack your breath.

A handful of mindful breaths and a few gentle movements scattered through the journey can mean the difference between arriving depleted and arriving ready for the adventure ahead.

Wherever the next long weekend or the rest of your summer carries you… may you travel well by treating yourself with kindness, one sweet breath at a time. 🧡

Love,
